The Elements of Christ: Finding God in Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine gives much profound insight into that wonderful creation: the human person. It explains how spiritual problems can manifest as physical problems. It shows how man is intimately related to the rest of creation. Like many of the great metaphysical systems, it is able to point beyond itself to something greater.

Studying and practicing oriental medicine for over twenty years led Henry to ask: who or what is the author of this magnificent Universe, and this wonderful but fallen being called man? In a strange twist of irony, Chinese medicine has been a kind of Old Testament for the author, and led him to the last place he expected: Christ. For him, Chinese medicine finds its fullest explanation and fulfilment in the Person of Christ, the Incarnation of God. Some of my patients have come to this from the other direction. The version of Christianity they were given lacked depth, and stopped short of the full picture. It did not give them a framework or a method to explore the hidden mystery of life. It did not move their hearts, or heal their souls. This void led many of them to explore Eastern mysticism and medicine: but for many this did not satisfy either.

This book explores the original notion that Christ has the power to transform our being. We are living in darkness, separated from God: Christ is the Light that leads us back to Him. Chinese medicine has much power to heal, but in the author’s experience this healing is perfected in Christ. Many of Henry’s patients find it strange that as a practitioner of Chinese medicine he is a Christian, and ask him why. This book is his reply.

Book endorsement by Ursula King, Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies, Bristol University:

“An unusual book of great originality. It relates essential insights from ancient Chinese medicine to the rich symbolism of the Christian mystical tradition, especially Orthodox Christianity, revealing unexpected connections about the health and harmony of body, mind and spirit, the nature of the human being, the true purpose of life. A very accessible read, this is a book to be reflected on and challenged by, with much practical advice about a healthy life style, vitality, human flourishing and spiritual renewal.”
