The Taoist Philosophy of illness

This goes back to at least 200 BC, and is explained in the “Yellow Emperor’s Classic”. This ancient text says that illness is due to a departure from “The Tao”. The Tao has been translated as “The Way” or even as “God”. Departure from The Tao could be seen as turning away from God, or away from the True Way.

Following The Tao involves:
• eating & drink in moderation;
• keeping regular hours, including eating;
• resting properly (including the mind), especially in winter;
• not being ruled by our emotions;
• living a virtuous, humble life.

The Taoists believed that it is because we do not follow this simple advice that we become ill.
